Economic Ultrasounds: Philips IU22

Tue Mar 21 2023

The Philips IU22 has consistently remained one of the most popular ultrasound systems on the market for nearly two decades. The brother of the IE33, and equally loved, the IU22 is a top-tier economic, shared-service ultrasound unit.

Revisions:

Like the IE33, the IU22 has many gone through many variations, updates, and developments throughout the years.

Similarly, the oldest (and cheapest) variations of this system are “A Cart” “B Cart” and the “C Cart”. These units are the the most economical available, but riskiest to purchase due to age.

The “D Cart”, on the other hand, is a nice middle ground between reliability and cost. Although these units probably cannot be heavily used for years on end as of this publishing, the office occasionally conducting ultrasounds will love this system for its reliability, versatility, and cost. Capable of cardiac, abdominal, OB-GYN, vascular, and veterinary exams, the D cart can be purchased patient-ready with probes for less than $10,000.

The “E Cart” and “F Cart”, on the other hand, are newer - and therefore more reliable to support more heavy use. The image quality continues to improve with the models, and higher quality probes are compatible with the ultrasound. This includes the L17-5 linear probe, S5-1 cardiac probe, C10-3v vaginal probe, and the C5-1 curved array probe.

The “G Cart” is widely thought to be the latest revision of the IU22, but, in fact, there’s one more, less well-known system; the “R Cart”. It was not manufactured for a long time, and few people even know it exists. These two systems are still extremely popular, and have imaging quality that compares to some of the newer units on the market.

Popular Imaging Applications:

The IU22 is most popularly used for general radiology. This includes abdominal (including kidney, liver, interior artery, and more), vascular, MSK, sports medicine, OB-GYN (2D/3D imaging included), fetal echo, small parts, veterinary, and needle-guided injections.

Additionally, the system is capable of having cardiac software enabled - allowing sonographers and doctors to conduct adult echo, pediatric echo, and stress echo exams.

Ultrasound Safety:

There is always the concern, particularly when it comes to medical equipment, regarding the safety of the devices and the potential side effects that occur as a result of employing these machines.

It is important to know that ultrasound machines are known to be completely harmless. They function through the utilization of sound waves emitting from the probe or transducer. These sound waves are then translated into images by the ultrasound machine or system. There is no need to fear when using ultrasound machines – it is a quick, easy and efficient way to diagnose and help determine a patient’s ails.
